David Lynch Asserts He Will Not Retire Despite Health Issues
LOS ANGELES, Aug 5 (Reuters) – David Lynch, the celebrated creator of "Twin Peaks," announced on Monday that despite being diagnosed with emphysema, he has no intention of retiring. He made this clarification following an earlier interview with Sight and Sound magazine, where he suggested that he might have to stop working due to his health condition.
The 78-year-old filmmaker took to social media platform X to thank everyone for their concern regarding his diagnosis. Lynch attributed his condition to his long history of smoking, acknowledging that emphysema, a chronic lung disease, has no cure.
"Yes, I have emphysema from my many years of smoking. I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco - The smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them," Lynch wrote, in a post that garnered 1.3 million likes. "But there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and The price for me is emphysema. I have now quit smoking for over two years. Recently I had many tests and The good news is that I am in excellent shape except for emphysema," he added.
In The Sight and Sound interview, which will be featured in their September cover story, Lynch revealed that he is currently homebound due to his fear of contracting COVID-19, which would pose a significant risk to his health. “I’ve gotten emphysema from smoking for so long, and so I’m homebound whether I like it or not ... And now, because of COVID, it would be very bad for me to get sick, even with a cold," Lynch told the British magazine.
The director of "Eraserhead" and "The Elephant Man" also shared that his condition limits his physical activity, as he can only walk a short distance before becoming breathless. Despite these challenges, Lynch mentioned the possibility of directing remotely, though he admitted it would not be his preferred method. "I would really hate that," he added, reflecting his reluctance to move away from in-person directing.
A representative for Lynch did not respond to requests for comment.
